7 Warning Signs Your Komatsu Turbocharger Is Failing

High load factors and long operating hours mean Komatsu turbochargers accumulate wear faster than many on-highway applications. These symptoms require immediate attention:

1. Black smoke under swing and travel load — The most common early symptom on SAA6D107 and SAA6D114 engines. Reduced boost causes rich combustion; visible black smoke under maximum load cycles is a reliable early indicator of turbo performance loss.
2. Slow throttle response — Turbo lag longer than normal during throttle inputs indicates worn compressor or turbine bearings reducing spool speed. On common rail engines, the ECU compensates with fuel enrichment — masking the problem while it worsens.
3. Oil in the air filter housing or charge air cooler — Compressor-side seal failure allows lubrication oil to enter the intake tract. Check the inside of the air filter housing and charge air cooler tubes for an oily residue — a reliable early detection method before full seal failure.
4. Whining or grinding noise from the turbo — Bearing wear on the SAA6D107’s journal bearings produces a characteristic whine that increases with engine RPM and load. Distinguish from normal turbo noise by listening for a change in pitch or the presence of a metallic grinding component.
