6 Warning Signs Your Mitsubishi Turbocharger Is Failing

  1. S6R / S12R genset black smoke during load acceptance — the most visible early symptom on large Mitsubishi gensets. When the generator is switched on and picks up building load, a worn turbocharger cannot maintain boost during the transient — producing a burst of black smoke as the engine over-fuels the available air. This symptom during automatic mains failure (AMF) testing is a reliable early warning.
  2. S12R boost imbalance between cylinder banks — the V12 configuration means each bank has its own turbocharger. As one unit wears faster than the other, the engine develops an uneven exhaust note and vibration at operating RPM. This is detectable by comparing exhaust temperature between banks — a significant differential indicates one turbo is underperforming.
  3. 4D56 blue smoke on L200 / Pajero at startup — the most common early turbo symptom on the 4D56. Oil passing worn TD04 seals enters the intake and combustion chamber during the first seconds of engine start. Blue smoke that clears within 30–60 seconds of warm-up is a reliable indicator of TD04 compressor seal wear — distinct from valve seal failure which produces smoke throughout operation.
  4. 4D34 power loss on loaded Canter delivery routes — worn TD05H turbos on the Fuso Canter 4D34 manifest as power loss under load on urban delivery routes. Drivers report difficulty maintaining speed on inclines at rated payload — a symptom that appears 50,000–100,000 km before complete turbo failure on well-maintained vehicles.
  5. S6S-DT forklift whine under lift load — the TD04HL on heavy forklifts produces a distinctive high-pitched bearing whine during maximum lift cycles (peak boost demand). This sound — which may be mistaken for hydraulic pump noise — indicates TD04HL bearing wear requiring prompt attention to prevent catastrophic failure during a loaded lift operation.
  6. GTB2056V fault codes on Fuso Canter F1C — the newer Canter uses a variable geometry GTB2056V that generates ECU fault codes when the VGT mechanism is fouled or the actuator fails. Codes P0299 (underboost) and P0234 (overboost) on the 3.0L F1C engine almost always relate to the GTB2056V before any mechanical failure occurs — clean the VGT vanes and test the actuator before condemning the turbo assembly.

Mitsubishi-Specific Failure Patterns

  • S6R / S12R genset hot shutdown — large genset operators frequently shut down the engine immediately after load transfer without an idle-down period. At the thermal mass of the S6R and S12R, this causes severe oil coking in the turbocharger feed passages. Implementing a mandatory 5-minute cool-down idle before shutdown is the single most cost-effective preventive measure for large Mitsubishi genset turbochargers.
  • 4D56 TD04 counterfeit units in Southeast Asian markets — the 4D56 aftermarket in Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam is heavily infiltrated with counterfeit TD04 units. These externally resemble genuine Mitsubishi or Mitsubishi-type units but fail within 10,000–20,000 km. Always verify supplier documentation and request dynamic balance certificates for 4D56 TD04 replacements.
  • 4D34 oil feed line coking on urban delivery fleets — Fuso Canter delivery trucks in urban distribution make multiple stops per hour with hot engine shutdown. Oil coking in the TD05H feed line is endemic in this application. Regular feed line inspection and replacement at 150,000 km significantly extends TD05H service life.
  • S12R intercooler contamination from turbo failure — the V12 layout means a turbo failure on one bank can contaminate the intercooler core for that bank with oil. If the intercooler is not cleaned or replaced, the replacement turbocharger will fail prematurely as it draws oil-contaminated air back through the compressor wheel. Intercooler inspection and cleaning is mandatory after any S12R turbocharger failure.
