Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engines: From Generator Sets to Fuso Trucks
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) produces one of the most diverse diesel engine ranges in the world — spanning compact light commercial engines used in Mitsubishi Fuso trucks and vans, through mid-range industrial and marine engines, to the large S6R y S12R generator set and marine propulsion engines that power critical infrastructure across Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
The turbocharger replacement market for Mitsubishi diesel engines covers two distinct segments that require very different sourcing approaches: the large industrial/marine segment (S6R, S12R, S16R — high-value, low-volume, long lead times from OEM channels) and the light commercial and industrial segment (4D56, 4D34, 6D22T3, S6S — high-volume, widely available, multiple quality tiers in the aftermarket).
At Piezas HHX, we supply turbochargers across both segments, with particular depth in the Mitsubishi Fuso light commercial and medium truck range. This guide covers the full Mitsubishi turbocharger landscape — from the S6R/S12R genset platform through to the Fuso 4D56, 4D34, and 6D22 truck and bus engines.

S6R and S12R — The Large Generator Set Platform
The Mitsubishi S6R and S12R are among the most widely installed large diesel generator set engines in Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Africa and the Middle East. MHI-branded gensets in the 500–2,000 kVA range are commonly found in hospitals, data centres, airports, mining operations, and island power supply installations across these regions.
S6R Turbocharger Specifications
The S6R uses a single large turbocharger (or twin turbos on higher-power variants) with charge air intercooling. Key OEM references:
- Turbocharger model: MHI TD/TF-series large frame (proprietary IHI-supplied units)
- Primary OEM part numbers: 49181-03872 / 49181-03882 (S6R-PTA / S6R2-PTA)
- Variant coverage: S6R-PTA, S6R-MPTA, S6R-Y1MPTA, S6R2-Y1MPTA
- Power ratings covered: 588–735 kW (800–1,000 HP) at 1,500 / 1,800 RPM
S12R Turbocharger Specifications
The S12R V12 uses twin turbochargers — one per bank of six cylinders — with intercooling between the turbo and each bank’s intake manifold. Both turbochargers must be replaced as a matched pair to maintain balanced boost across both cylinder banks.
- Turbocharger model: MHI/IHI TD-series, twin installation
- Primary OEM part numbers: 49182-03471 / 49182-03481 (S12R-PTA / S12R-PTAA2)
- Variant coverage: S12R-PTA, S12R-PTA2, S12R-PTAA2, S12R-MPTAW, S12R-Y1PTAW
- Power ratings covered: 1,029–1,618 kW (1,400–2,200 HP) at 1,500 / 1,800 RPM
- Critical note: always replace both turbos simultaneously on S12R — a new turbo paired with a worn unit causes boost imbalance between banks, accelerating the new unit’s wear
S6R / S12R Turbocharger Sourcing Notes
The S6R and S12R turbocharger market has specific characteristics that buyers must understand:
- Long OEM lead times: genuine MHI/IHI replacement turbochargers typically have 8–16 week lead times from official Mitsubishi service channels — unacceptable for critical power installations where downtime has immediate operational consequences
- High unit value: OEM S6R and S12R turbochargers are among the most expensive single-engine components in the genset market — alternative sourcing from verified suppliers can reduce cost by 30–50% while maintaining performance specifications
- Remanufacturing is viable: unlike smaller turbos, the S6R and S12R turbocharger core (CHRA) can be successfully remanufactured by specialist rebuilders if the housing is undamaged. This is a cost-effective option for operators who cannot justify full replacement cost
- Intercooler inspection is mandatory: any S6R or S12R turbocharger failure must be followed by full intercooler inspection and cleaning — oil contamination of the intercooler core accelerates wear on the replacement unit if not addressed

6 Warning Signs Your Mitsubishi Turbocharger Is Failing
- S6R / S12R genset black smoke during load acceptance — the most visible early symptom on large Mitsubishi gensets. When the generator is switched on and picks up building load, a worn turbocharger cannot maintain boost during the transient — producing a burst of black smoke as the engine over-fuels the available air. This symptom during automatic mains failure (AMF) testing is a reliable early warning.
- S12R boost imbalance between cylinder banks — the V12 configuration means each bank has its own turbocharger. As one unit wears faster than the other, the engine develops an uneven exhaust note and vibration at operating RPM. This is detectable by comparing exhaust temperature between banks — a significant differential indicates one turbo is underperforming.
- 4D56 blue smoke on L200 / Pajero at startup — the most common early turbo symptom on the 4D56. Oil passing worn TD04 seals enters the intake and combustion chamber during the first seconds of engine start. Blue smoke that clears within 30–60 seconds of warm-up is a reliable indicator of TD04 compressor seal wear — distinct from valve seal failure which produces smoke throughout operation.
- 4D34 power loss on loaded Canter delivery routes — worn TD05H turbos on the Fuso Canter 4D34 manifest as power loss under load on urban delivery routes. Drivers report difficulty maintaining speed on inclines at rated payload — a symptom that appears 50,000–100,000 km before complete turbo failure on well-maintained vehicles.
- S6S-DT forklift whine under lift load — the TD04HL on heavy forklifts produces a distinctive high-pitched bearing whine during maximum lift cycles (peak boost demand). This sound — which may be mistaken for hydraulic pump noise — indicates TD04HL bearing wear requiring prompt attention to prevent catastrophic failure during a loaded lift operation.
- GTB2056V fault codes on Fuso Canter F1C — the newer Canter uses a variable geometry GTB2056V that generates ECU fault codes when the VGT mechanism is fouled or the actuator fails. Codes P0299 (underboost) and P0234 (overboost) on the 3.0L F1C engine almost always relate to the GTB2056V before any mechanical failure occurs — clean the VGT vanes and test the actuator before condemning the turbo assembly.
Mitsubishi-Specific Failure Patterns
- S6R / S12R genset hot shutdown — large genset operators frequently shut down the engine immediately after load transfer without an idle-down period. At the thermal mass of the S6R and S12R, this causes severe oil coking in the turbocharger feed passages. Implementing a mandatory 5-minute cool-down idle before shutdown is the single most cost-effective preventive measure for large Mitsubishi genset turbochargers.
- 4D56 TD04 counterfeit units in Southeast Asian markets — the 4D56 aftermarket in Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam is heavily infiltrated with counterfeit TD04 units. These externally resemble genuine Mitsubishi or Mitsubishi-type units but fail within 10,000–20,000 km. Always verify supplier documentation and request dynamic balance certificates for 4D56 TD04 replacements.
- 4D34 oil feed line coking on urban delivery fleets — Fuso Canter delivery trucks in urban distribution make multiple stops per hour with hot engine shutdown. Oil coking in the TD05H feed line is endemic in this application. Regular feed line inspection and replacement at 150,000 km significantly extends TD05H service life.
- S12R intercooler contamination from turbo failure — the V12 layout means a turbo failure on one bank can contaminate the intercooler core for that bank with oil. If the intercooler is not cleaned or replaced, the replacement turbocharger will fail prematurely as it draws oil-contaminated air back through the compressor wheel. Intercooler inspection and cleaning is mandatory after any S12R turbocharger failure.
Specification Checklist for Ordering
- Engine model suffix — S6R-PTA, S6R-MPTA, S12R-PTAA2, 4D56T, 4D34-3AT etc. — different suffixes indicate different power ratings and turbo specifications
- OEM part number from the turbo data plate — for 4D56 and 4D34: the 4917x-xxxxx format; for S6R/S12R: the 4918x-xxxxx format. Always verify directly from the data plate rather than from a parts book — multiple supersessions exist across all series
- Production year and market — 4D56 variants differ between Japanese domestic, Australian, Southeast Asian, and European market specifications
- For S12R: confirm turbo position (left bank or right bank) — the two turbos are mirror images of each other in some configurations; ordering without specifying position risks receiving the wrong rotation direction
