6 Warning Signs Your John Deere PowerTech Turbo Is Failing

1. Black or grey smoke under field load — the most visible early symptom on 6068-powered tractors under heavy draft or PTO load. A worn S200G compressor wheel cannot maintain rated boost, causing visible smoke under maximum engine demand. Often first noticed during tillage or silage operations.
2. Loss of power on hillside or high-altitude work — turbocharger performance degrades fastest at altitude and under sustained high-load conditions. Farmers operating in highland regions often notice turbo issues first as a power shortfall at elevation that did not previously exist.
3. Oil in the air cleaner or intake piping — pull the air cleaner housing on a suspect 6068 or 6081 and inspect the interior for an oily film. This is the earliest reliable detection method for compressor-side seal failure on Schwitzer S200-series turbos, and catching it early prevents intake contamination.
4. Excessive shaft play felt at the compressor wheel — with the engine cold and off, reach into the compressor inlet and apply light lateral force to the compressor wheel. Any movement beyond a barely perceptible amount indicates journal bearing wear beyond the service limit. This check takes 30 seconds and requires no tools.
5. Turbo noise change during transport between fields — operators frequently notice a change in turbo sound during road transport at constant RPM. A new high-pitched whine or grinding character that changes with throttle position indicates bearing deterioration.
6. High-hour excavator power loss in digging cycle — on 6068-powered excavators (200CLC, 210G), turbo wear manifests as reduced breakout force and slower bucket fill times on the digging cycle — symptoms often attributed to hydraulic issues but traced to turbocharger underboost on closer diagnosis.

• RE number supersession confusion — John Deere has superseded many 6068 turbocharger RE numbers across production years. An RE number from a 2002-build machine may have been superseded two or three times. Always verify the data plate number on the existing turbocharger rather than ordering from the parts book RE number for older machines.
• 6081 S2ESL crankcase ventilation blockage — on high-hour 8000-series tractors using the S2ESL-116 turbocharger, a blocked crankcase ventilation system creates excessive positive crankcase pressure that pushes oil past the compressor seal. Always check and clean the CCV system before replacing the turbocharger on 6081-powered 8000-series tractors.
• Harvest-season dust ingestion (6068 combines and tractors) — John Deere 6068-powered machines working in harvest conditions face extreme air filter loads. • 6068 excavator coolant leak into oil (head gasket) — on higher-hour 200CLC and 210G excavators, a failing cylinder head gasket contaminates engine oil with coolant, dramatically reducing oil film strength and destroying turbo journal bearings within hours.
