6 Warning Signs Your Deutz Turbocharger Is Failing

  1. Black smoke from genset under load (BF6M1013 / TCD2013) — the most visible early sign on Deutz-powered generator sets. A worn S200G or S2A compressor wheel reduces boost, causing rich combustion and visible black smoke under generator load. Often first noticed during load bank testing or peak demand periods.

  5. Oil coking in the S2A feed line is the dominant failure pattern — detectable by excessive shaft play at the next service.
  6. Large genset overboost followed by power cut (BF8M1015C) — the S400 large-frame turbocharger on BF8M1015C gensets can develop wastegate actuator failure, allowing boost to exceed the set point before the ECU triggers a power derate or shutdown. This symptom — brief overpower followed by shutdown — is frequently misdiagnosed as a fuel system or ECU fault before the wastegate is checked.

Deutz-Specific Failure Patterns

  • 913 air-cooled oil coking — the dominant failure mode: Deutz BF4L913 and BF6L913 air-cooled engines generate more heat soak after shutdown than any liquid-cooled equivalent. Without a turbo timer or cool-down idle, the stationary oil in the S2A or S2B feed line carbonises within months on machines with multiple hot shutdowns per day.   • 1013-series contaminated oil from extended genset service intervals: Deutz-powered generator sets in developing markets frequently operate on extended oil change intervals of 500+ hours, beyond the recommended 250–300 hours for hard-duty applications.
