3. IHI Part Number Identification

3.1 IHI vs OEM Part Numbers

Like other major OEM turbocharger manufacturers, IHI units installed in vehicles carry the vehicle manufacturer’s part number on the housing data plate — not the IHI catalogue number. A Subaru WRX turbocharger will carry a Subaru part number (e.g. 14411AA series), while the same unit in IHI’s catalogue is a VF-series designation.

When sourcing IHI replacement turbochargers, cross-referencing between the OEM vehicle part number and the IHI catalogue number is standard practice. Aftermarket catalogues typically list both numbers — the vehicle OEM number for fitment identification and the IHI number for specification confirmation.

3.2 RHF Series Frame Size Identification

The RHF series designator encodes approximate compressor wheel inducer size and design generation:

  • RHF3: Smallest frame — kei and compact engines below 1.3L
  • RHF4 / RHF4H: Small frame — 1.3L–2.0L light diesel and petrol
  • RHF5 / RHF55: Medium frame — 2.0L–2.8L diesel workhorses (most common in the aftermarket)
  • RHF6: Larger medium frame — 2.8L–3.5L diesel and some industrial applications

The “H” suffix in RHF4H indicates a higher-output specification (strengthened bearing housing and compressor wheel trim) compared to the base RHF4.


4. Common IHI Turbocharger Failure Modes

4.1 Oil Seal Failure (Most Common — All Series)

Oil seal degradation is the most frequent IHI failure across all series, particularly on vehicles used predominantly for short urban journeys without sustained highway operation:

  • Symptoms: Blue/grey smoke at startup (cold oil seal), blue smoke under sustained boost (hot seal), oil accumulation in intercooler or intake piping
  • Contributing factors: Clogged PCV (crankcase ventilation) creating excess crankcase pressure; extended idling without hot oil pressure buildup; incorrect oil viscosity for ambient temperature
  • Diagnose: Check shaft axial and radial play before condemning the turbocharger — oil seal failure with intact bearings may not require full replacement on all applications

4.2 Compressor Wheel Erosion (Subaru / Performance Applications)

On high-boost Subaru VF-series applications, pre-ignition or knock events can cause compressor surge, leading to compressor wheel tip fatigue over time. Additionally, failed air filter seals allow abrasive particles to erode compressor blade leading edges. Inspection: remove air intake and examine blade tips for erosion, pitting, or fold marks.

4.3 Turbine Wheel Cracking (4D56 / High-Temperature Applications)

Mitsubishi 4D56 applications in hot climates (Middle East, East Africa) are susceptible to turbine wheel thermal fatigue when engines are operated at high loads in extreme ambient temperatures without adequate cooldown periods. Symptoms: audible turbine noise change, visible hairline cracking on turbine blade roots on disassembly.

4.4 Wastegate Actuator Failure (RHF Series)

On RHF series units with mechanical wastegate actuators, diaphragm failure is a common service point on high-mileage units. Symptoms: overboost (wastegate stuck closed) or underboost (wastegate stuck open). Diagnosis: apply controlled pressure to actuator nipple and confirm diaphragm integrity and correct cracking pressure.
